About this Item
In 1899 the United States Congress created the first Isthmian Canal Commission, to find the most feasible route through the Central American Isthmus to build a canal. After setbacks, the commission was reconvened in 1904. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed 7 original members of the second Isthmian Canal Commission to report to Secretary of War William Taft. The ICC was given control over the Panama Canal Zone, which the United States declared as sovereign territory. These annual reports are extremely thorough records of both engineering progress as well as daily life of those working in the canal zone, with numerous photographs, diagrams, and fold-out maps. ~~The 1909 report is one large volume of several hundred pages and dozens of maps and photographs. 9 ¼"x 7" x 3 ¼"; excellent apart from last fold-out map shows slight foxing, insect damage to bottom edge. Reinforced on the last page with pencil signature, "Broserahan (?)". Light wear to spine. ~~The 1910 report is split into a volume of reports and a volume of plates. The "Annual Report of the Isthmian Canal Commission" is 9 ½" x 6 ¾" x 1 ¾" with light foxing at plates; ¼" section where outer edge of pages are slightly deformed. The 1910 "Annual Report of the Isthmian Canal Commission Maps & Diagrams" is an unbound, removeable group of inserts made to look like regular bound volume. The first 2 pages are an index showing Plates 75-153 in Appendixes A-S; there are no missing plates. 9 ½" x 7" 2 ¼"; bottom cardboard edge of shell loose, some wear to shell and a 1" spot of discoloration on front; the front cover is detached but present; pages with some very scattered foxing but otherwise good. ~.
