Late-19th or early 20th century decorative binding presumably prepared by "Bickers & Son, Leicester Sqr" as their name is discreetly ink-stamped at top left corner of the front free endpaper verso. Full dark red morocco leather; lightly rubbed boards decorated with thin double-line gilt stamped borders and gilt dentelle edges, decorative tooling along interior edges of leather where it meets the pastedowns; several light moisture stains upon front board with mild bumping evident at top edge. Spine decorated with five raised bands delineating six compartments which retain brightly gilt tooled centerpieces and borders; second compartment from top has brright gilt stamped title lettering against dark blue leather; mild bump and minor scuffing at spine heel with fractionally shallow chip at scuffed spine head; short 1cm tear at head of front joint. All edges marbled; marbled endpapers. Three-line ink ownership inscription upon front flyleaf: "J.P. Churchill | 2nd Div. English | Dec. 1896." Frontispiece b/w plate; Preface; Index. Seven b/w plates amongst text all on unpgaed leaves with most having roughly trimmed fore-edges. Charles Rathbone Low was a naval historian and author best known for his two-volume HISTORY OF THE INDIAN NAVY first published in 1877. A handsome very good copy of an uncommon book. …
