About this Item

Description:

The first complete English translation. Publication No. 21 in Yale Medical Library's Historical Library. Small quarto: xxxvi, 103 p. with a 25 p. facsimile. Original burgundy cloth binding, with gilt stamping. The spine is sun faded; else very good. The highly influential anatomist Andreas Vesalius of Brussels (1514-64) is often credited as the founder of the modern study of human anatomy. His De humani corporis fabrica, a landmark of modern science, is best known for its iconic and endlessly reproduced woodblock illustrations of the muscular, skeletal, vascular, and nervous systems. The Fabrica may be the only medical masterwork that was published simultaneously with a synopsis prepared by the author. Vesalius designed his Suorum de humani corporis fabrica librorum epitome to serve as a more affordable outline of the encyclopedic and expensive Fabrica in what translator L.R. Lind calls "a triumph of condensation". In his dedication to Prince Philip of Spain, Vesalius stated that "I have made [the Epitome] to be as it were a foot-path beside the larger book, and as an index of what is set forth in it." Previously only translated into German and Dutch, this translation was inspired by the 400th anniversary of the Epitome's publication in 1943. Included is a reproduction of the Latin original, with its 11 beautiful plates. Seller Inventory # 76473
