ESSENTIALS OPHTHALMOLOG (2ND ED)

Written by a multi-disciplinary team from the Department of Ophthalmology at the National University Health System in Singapore, the 2nd Edition of Essentials of Ophthalmology: For Medical School and Beyond is a significantly improved version of the much appreciated first edition. The original purpose of this publication remains the same: to serve as a comprehensive reference book for medical undergraduates, residents, and family physicians, who are often the first line of eye care providers in the community. The book is designed to cover all the Entrusted Professional Activities (EPAs) mandated by the Undergraduate Ophthalmology curriculum in Singapore. The chapters have been thoroughly revised, with the addition of new clinical images and expanded coverage of ophthalmic conditions. This edition also introduces three new chapters: one on basic electrophysiology, which aims to clarify the complex electrical responses of the retina and visual pathway to light; another on biostatistics, intended to inspire students to engage in basic research; and a comprehensive chapter on the End of Posting Test (EOPT), featuring scenario-based questions and answers from every subspecialty in ophthalmology, which will be invaluable for students preparing for assessments. The original point format, including "learning objectives" and "take-home messages," has been preserved to facilitate easy reading and quick learning. With nearly 250 high-resolution clinical images, this book now serves as an even more practical guide to studying ocular diseases, along with the basic methods of investigation and treatment where applicable. Written by experts from every sub-specialty for undergraduate medical students, the book is concise and well-illustrated with high resolution clinical pictures, and distinguished by its point format and inclusion of learning objectives and take-home messages.

Ray Manotosh is currently a Senior Consultant and Head of the Division of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the National University Health System, Singapore. His areas of specialization include the cornea, external eye diseases, contact lenses, and refractive surgery. He also serves as an Associate Professor and Education Director of Ophthalmology at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Additionally, he is actively involved in the postgraduate residency program as core faculty at the National University Hospital, Singapore. Associate Professor Ray completed his undergraduate training at the University of Calcutta, India, and his basic surgical training in ophthalmology at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India's premier medical institute. He then pursued advanced surgical training in cornea and external diseases at AIIMS. In 1998 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK) in Ophthalmology. Following his advanced surgical training, he joined the National University Hospital, Singapore, in 2002. In 2006, he received the NHG Excellence Award for Teaching. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to numerous textbook chapters. Beyond his academic and professional pursuits, Dr Ray enjoys spending time with his family. He is passionate about oil painting and has exhibited his work. He has also published a fiction book, which he is extremely proud of.

Yuen Yew Sen, an ASEAN scholar who graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS), is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology, NUS and Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology, National University Hospital (NUH). He is also the Director of Undergraduate Education for the National University of Singapore's Department of Ophthalmology and part of the Core Faculty for the National University Health System (NUHS) Ophthalmology residency programme involved in training the next generation of ophthalmologists. He has sub-specialty training in both Vitreoretinal Surgery and Uveitis (Ocular Inflammation) and is the recipient of the Ministry of Health - Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) award. Apart from his clinical duties, he has been awarded the Junior Doctor Teaching Award and Young Teacher Award for his educational work. He has also been honoured to serve as examiner and admissions interviewer for his alma mater, the NUS School of Medicine.

Associate Professor Victor Koh is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and currently Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at National University Hospital. His clinical expertise encompasses both adult and childhood glaucoma management, as well as complex cataract surgery. He graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 2007 and received specialist accreditation in 2016. His primary research focus is on developing disruptive medical devices for community-based ophthalmic diagnostics and innovative laser and implant solutions for refractory glaucoma. His practice and professional philosophy are deeply influenced by his mentors, including Prof. Paul Chew, A/Prof. Clement Tan, Adj. A/Prof. Loon Seng Chee, Prof. Aung Tin, Prof. Sir Peng Khaw, and Dr Aliza Jap. Inspired by the guidance he received, he is dedicated to educating the next generation of doctors and medical students, ensuring the highest standards of patient care. He expresses his heartfelt gratitude to his wife and two sons, whose unwavering support has been invaluable throughout his training years and career.
