Exemplar não aparado, com leve falha de papel no topo superior direito dos dois primeiros fólios e no canto superior direito da página 3. As últimas páginas inumeradas contêm a «PAUTA DOS GENEROS pertencentes a cada uma das classes dos MERCADORES compreendidas nestes Estatutos» (páginas 1 a 5), um alvará de confirmação real, cujo primeiro subscritor é o Secretário de Estado dos Negócios do Reyno, Sebastião Joseph de Carvalho e Mello (págs. 7 a 9) e a relação das pessoas nomeadas pelo rei para fundarem a Mesa do Bem-Comum dos Mercadores de Retalho, cujo intendente foi Félix Mendes Leitão (págs. 10 e 11). A criação destes estatutos, a criação da Junta de Comércio dois anos antes, também subordinada à Mesa do Bem-Comum dos Mercadores, e a introdução das Aulas de Comércio em 1759 faziam parte da estratégia da política reformista do Marquês de Pombal e foram fundamentais para integrar os mercadores e os negociantes no seio da sociedade, retirando-lhe o estigma de pertencer a extratos sociais inferiores. O novo estatuto conferia aos homens de negócios a sensação de integração na elite social e económica. Outros actos institucionais levados a cabo por Pombal, tais como a atribuição de distinções simbólicas a negociantes influentes (por exemplo Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo e da Ordem de Santiago), reflectem a ascensão da escala social e hierárquica deste grupo na sociedade portuguesa. The last unnumbered pages contain the 'Table of commodities belonging to each of the classes of Merchants included in these Statutes' (pages 1 to 5), a royal confirmation permit, whose first subscriber is the Secretary of State for the Businesses of the Kingdom, Sebastião Joseph de Carvalho e Mello (pages 7 to 9), and the list of the persons appointed by the King to found the Table of Commodity of Retail Merchants, whose Intendant was Félix Mendes Leitão (pages 10 and 11). The creation of these statutes, the creation of the Trade Board two years earlier, also subordinated to the Table of Commodity of Retail Merchants, and the introduction of the Trade Lessons in 1759 were part of the strategy of the reformist policy of the Marquis of Pombal and were fundamental to integrate merchants and traders into society, removing the stigma of belonging to inferior social classes. The new status gave businessmen a sense of integration into the social and economic elite. Other institutional acts carried out by Pombal, such as the attribution of symbolic distinctions to influential merchants (e.g. Knight of the Order of Christ and of the Order of Santiago), reflect the rise of this group?s social and hierarchical scale in Portuguese society.
