Mary Berry (1763-1852) was a English non-fiction writer, best known for her letters and journals, however her most famous work was a comedy: Fashionable Friends; England and France, a Comparative View of the Social Conditions in both Countries. In addition to her literary achievements, Berry, along with her sister Agnes, was known for her close association with Whig politician and writer Horace Walpole, who described them as his 'two wives' and established them in various houses. Includes four illustrative plates, collated complete. In original maroon cloth binding withblind embossing and gilt detailing; spines faded a nd some edge and corner wear. 3 volumes complete: Vol.I xli+492p frontis & 1 plate of Kirkbridge, Stanwick, Yorkshire. Gutters exposed and rear hinge pulled. Vol.II 549p portrait frontis; gutters intact and binding reasonably tight. Vol.II567p frontis and detailed index.fep missing and mull exposed in both gutters.
