Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. first edition of Extracts of the Journals and Correspondence of Miss Berry, written by noted biographer Maria Theresa Lewis. Mary Berry (1763-1852) was a English non-fiction writer, best known for her letters and journals, however her most famous work was a comedy: Fashionable Friends; England and France, a Comparative View of the Social Conditions in both Countries. In addition to her literary achievements, Berry, along with her sister Agnes, was known for her close association with Whig politician and writer Horace Walpole, who described them as his 'two wives' and established them in various houses. Includes four illustrative plates, collated complete. In original maroon cloth binding withblind embossing and gilt detailing; spines faded a nd some edge and corner wear. 3 volumes complete: Vol.I xli+492p frontis & 1 plate of Kirkbridge, Stanwick, Yorkshire. Gutters exposed and rear hinge pulled. Vol.II 549p portrait frontis; gutters intact and binding reasonably tight. Vol.II567p frontis and detailed index.fep missing and mull exposed in both gutters. Booksellers ticket - David Bryce, 129 Buchanan Street, Glasgow. All half titles are signed by Misses Liddell , Berryburn 1868. (Miss Liddell of Berryburn, was the treasurer and secretary of a ladies school at 13 Quay Street, Gourock, attended by about 20 girls, who pay 2d. per week, for which they are taught reading and sewing).An excellent reading set.
