This volume contributes to the study of the identity of Jesus, focusing on how he was originally perceived both by his contemporaries and in the earliest Christian writings. The essays include studies of methodology, archaeology, background, individual gospel perspectives, gospel relationships,
intertextuality in the gospels, the earliest reception of the Jesus tradition in the post-Easter writings of the New Testament, and the missiological and pedagogical implications of Jesus' teaching.
John Nolland is the reason for this volume, and his important writings on the gospels are its backdrop. The contributors, who include N.T. Wright, Craig Evans, Darrell Bock, Rainer Riesner and Roland Deines, pay tribute to Nolland's work and ideas, by drawing on his writings, and by exploring questions and issues close to his heart.

About the Author
Aaron White, PhD (Bristol University 2017), a Presbyterian pastor, is author of The Prophets Agree: The Function of the Twelve Prophets in Acts (Brill, BINS, 2020), and co-editor of The Earliest Perceptions of Jesus in Context (Bloomsbury/T&T Clark, 2017) with David Wenham and Craig Evans, and Who Created Christianity? Fresh Approaches to the Relationship Between Jesus and Paul (Hendrickson, forthcoming, 2020) with Craig Evans. Additionally, he is contracted to write the Judges volume in the Septuagint Commentary Series (Brill). White is the chair of the Luke-Acts steering committee and member of the Septuagint studies steering committee, both with the Evangelical Theological Society. He is an active member of the Tyndale Fellowship.
Craig Evans (PhD, Claremont; DHabil, Budapest) is the John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins at Houston Baptist University. He is the author of several books on Jesus, the Gospels, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and archaeology. Evans has given lectures at Cambridge, Durham, Oxford, and Yale as well as the Field Museum in Chicago and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. He has appeared in many television documentaries and news programs, including Dateline NBC and CBS Sunday Morning.
