On paper, it was the best day of my life. June 14, 2021. My last Monday morning alarm. I deleted it from my phone at 6:00 a.m., stretched out in 800-thread-count sheets, and whispered to my wife, “We did it. We’re free.” Our net worth sat a few ticks above $2.3 million. The house in Austin was paid off. I was 38 years old and a poster child for the FIRE movement—Financial Independence, Retire Early. I had beaten the game.
Six months later, I was clinically depressed. A year later my blood pressure had spiked, my sleep had shattered into late-night anxiety spirals, and my marriage was on life support. I wasn’t dying of a heart attack. I was dying of nothing. Of empty days that stretched like taut wire. Of a brain built for problem-solving force-fed Netflix and sourdough experiments. I learned the hard way what no spreadsheet can calculate: early retirement, pursued naively, really can kill you.
This book is not an argument against financial freedom. It’s the wake‑up call nobody inside the FIRE movement is giving you. Drawing on longitudinal studies of actual retirees, insights from psychologists and neuroscientists, and the raw confessions of dozens of early retirees who traded a stressful career for a meaningless void, Early Retirement Will Kill You exposes the four hidden killers of the post‑career life:
• The Identity Crisis – Why losing your “master status” in your 30s or 40s triggers a neurological freefall.
• The Health Paradox – How sudden removal of cognitive and physical demands accelerates disease and mortality.
• Social Atrophy – Why chain‑smoking loneliness in paradise is as lethal as a toxic boss.
• The Purpose Void – What happens when your brain’s seeking system is starved of meaningful goals.
But this is not a book of despair. It is a blueprint for a radical redesign. Through a new philosophy the author calls “Never Retire, Always Renew,” you will learn how to use financial independence not as an exit from life, but as an entrance to work that fuels you—on your own terms, in rhythms your body can thrive on, among people who know your name. You’ll meet former software engineers, marketing executives, and ER nurses who escaped the gilded cage and built portfolio careers, passion projects, and communities that restored their health, their relationships, and their reason to set an alarm a few mornings a week.
Don’t retire early. Renew early. True freedom isn’t the absence of work; it’s the presence of work you love until the very end. Your life is not a pension projection. Read Early Retirement Will Kill You before the void does.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
