Reviews: This one-volume atlas and encyclopedia of the Earth is edited for a U.S. audience, specifically for the home, office, and library, and most appropriately for the first two and for small versions of the third. It is about one-third "encyclopedia" (environmental information about the Earth, divided up into the ancient four elements, Air, Earth, Water, and Firewhich works surprisingly well), one-third elegant Esselte maps (from the classic European mapmaker), and one-third index. The maps, which include thematic maps for continents, are easy to read, and physiography is well shown. A $12.95 companion edition ( Concise Earth Book ), about 5x7, contains about half the maps plus a statistical section (e.g., population, area, etc., for countries), and is most appropriate for personal use.
