"The Earth: Its Origin, History and Physical Constitution" presents a rigorous scientific examination of the mechanical and physical properties of our planet. Written by the pioneering geophysicist Harold Jeffreys, this work serves as a cornerstone in the development of modern geophysics. It integrates principles from astronomy, physics, and geology to provide a comprehensive theory on the Earth's thermal history, its internal structure, and its evolution within the solar system.

The text explores key topics such as the age of the Earth, the mechanics of tidal friction, and the formation of mountain ranges. Jeffreys utilizes mathematical analysis to interpret seismic data and explain the physical constitution of the Earth's crust and core. By investigating the initial state of the planetary system and the subsequent cooling and solidification of the globe, the book offers a cohesive narrative of the Earth's physical history. This treatise is an essential resource for those seeking to understand the quantitative foundations of Earth science and the historical progression of geological and geophysical thought.
