This two-volume set is part of a four-series Earth Science set from Salem Press (eight volumes total) and would be a beneficial addition to high-school and undergraduate libraries. They include more than 125 lengthy articles on basic topics and are designed as an introduction to understanding the earth. The A–Z entries begin with ready-reference at the top, including a summary statement explaining why the topic is important to the study of the earth. Next is a list of principal terms and their definitions. The text is then divided into subheadings, making it easier to find particular information. At the end of each essay, there is an external source list for further reading and cross-references that might be of interest to the reader. The appendixes at the end of volume 2 include a glossary; a bibliography; a chart of common earth minerals; a list of earth facts (surface, size, mass, density, gravity, etc.); a historical time line of geophysical history; and a subject index. There are numerous photos, illustrations, maps, charts, and tables. Both volumes include a table of contents, a chart with common units of measurement, and a categorical list of contents at the beginning, making it easy to find a particular subject. Included in the purchase price of the volumes is complimentary online access to the full content of the print reference.
