The Eastern Arboretum, or Register of Remarkable Trees, Seats, Gardens, &C. in . Norfolk

The Eastern Arboretum, Or Register Of Remarkable Trees, Seats, Gardens, &C. In. Norfolk by James Grigor is a 19th-century travel-and-arboretum guide to Norfolk. It catalogs notable trees, gardens, and parklands with precise measurements and aesthetic commentary, blending natural-history observation, landscape critique, and antiquarian anecdote. The work offers a corridor-by-corridor survey of the Norwich–Yarmouth region and surrounding estates, introducing principal gardens and trees, noting winds, soils, and climate as factors shaping planting. It references gardeners and landscape designers such as Humphry Repton and botanists like De Candolle and Loudon, situating Norfolk’s arboreal wealth within a national tradition of tree study and landscape art. The volume emphasizes preservation, social value, and public education, including plans for a Norwich public garden. It provides data-rich profiles of individual specimens (oaks, beeches, ashes, plane trees) alongside discussions of garden entrances, sightlines, and the integration of architecture with planting. In tone, it blends travelogue, horticulture, and antiquarian lore to advocate thoughtful arboricultural stewardship.
