Published: n.d. (c1884) Most likely commissioned for the purposes of presenting to Miss Rutter on her wedding day. Not signed by author. Late Victorian Bible in a custom Bagster presentation binding. Presented by members of the British Temperance movement to Miss Rutter on June 11th, 1884 to celebrate her marriage, and retains the original loose presentation card addressed to 'The Bride'. PROVENANCE: Presented to Miss Florence Amy Rutter by members of the local Temperance Society on June 11th, 1884, on the occasion of her marriage to Mr. Alexander Eddington; subsequently held within the private library estate of the Eddington and Rutter family lines; later acquired through the antiquarian book trade. DESCRIPTION: Large full black morocco 'Bagster's binding' with four ridge spine and additional ridges to top and tail of spine. Blind faux binding to spine margins with bevelled edges to boards. Brass presentation plate to front board 'Presented To Miss Rutter the occasion of her marriage with Mr Alexander Eddington by The Temperance Society with the great respect and kind wishes of its members, June 11th 1884'. Gilt all edges. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with a fold out Table of Comparative Chronology and six maps to rear'. Bagster's binding' stamp to front dentelles. Language: English. Book Condition: Good. Light wear to corners, edges and spine ends. Rubbed boards with some historic polish residue to boards. Surface cracking to front endpaper with hinges remaining very firm. Short surface crack to rear endpaper. Spotting to fly pages and half title. First page of Family Register completed with first names being Alexander Eddington and Florence Amy Rutter. Annotation to margin of pages 1191-1192 otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. DJ Condition: No DJ. Pages 1368. Size: 33 cm by 24 cm. ADDITIONAL ITEMS: Retains the original small presentation card to The Bride with message to the reverse side. PROVENANCE BACKGROUND: Florence Amy Rutter (1855-1918) was the daughter of John Farley Rutter, a wealthy corporate solicitor, town clerk, and a major regional leader within the Western Temperance League who spent his career organising legal opposition to the British liquor trade. Alexander Eddington (1858-1929) was a prominent merchant and regional administrator whose marriage to Rutter united two highly influential families within the tightly-knit national network of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Their son, Arthur John Eddington (1886-1946) whose birth is recorded on the accompanying register leaf became a celebrated ecclesiastical historian, author of The First Fifty Years of Quakerism in Norwich, and served as the Clerk to the Executive Committee of the Society of Friends in Great Britain.
