At the beginning of the 21st century, the impossible was delivered. From the sterile depths of a disused china clay pit in Cornwall rose one of the most remarkable and ambitious ventures in recent memory. The Eden Project’s Biomes, the world’s largest conservatories, are the symbol of a living theater of plants and people and their interdependence, of regeneration and of a pioneering forum for the exploration of possible futures. This is the extraordinary story of the Eden Project, of its conception, design, and construction, of the larger-than-life personalities who made it happen and of all that has happened since its doors were first opened to the public in 2001. It is now undisputedly one of the world’s great gardens, with more than 17 million visitors flocking there and projects and partnerships all over the world.
Sir Tim Smit KBE graduated from Durham University before working as a county archeologist and later spending 10 years as a record producer and composer. He is the author of The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Sir Tim is Executive Vice-Chairman, and Co-founder of the award-winning Eden Project in Cornwall. He is a trustee, patron, and board member of a number of statutory and voluntary bodies both locally and nationally. He has been awarded honorary doctorates and fellowships by a number of universities, and his national awards include The Royal Society of Arts Albert Medal; "Great Briton of 2007" in the Environment category of the Morgan Stanley Great Britons Awards; and a special award at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. He regularly broadcasts on TV and radio, and has been the subject both of This is Your Life and Desert Island Discs.
