About this Item
Oversized hardcover. Bound in full leather. Measures about 12 x 18 inches. Raised cords on spine still securely bound to text block, but leather has flaked off the spine itself, leaving just brown underlayer & glimpses of the signature edges. Inside front cover has two bookplates, both from the Brooklyn Public Library. One states in a printed script that it was purhased from the income on the bequest received in 1898 from Samuel Bowne Duryea. The other is a partially printed accession label dated 1916. Engraved title page has library perforated stamp and accession number in blue rubberstamp ink. Copyright page has pencil notations. Text in French. 4 page dedication with elaborate header. 4 page preface. 4 pages 'Table des Chapitres' and 'additions et fautes a corriger'. Pagination begins after all that; pages numbered 1-321. Pages 1-62 are on the Pantheon, with 23 full page engravings. All the engravings have small Brooklyn Public Library rubberstamp, and also have a dampstain as large as an outstretched hand on the back side. The stain is faint on some of the plates, but conspicuous on others. Pages 63-73 are on the Temple de Bacchus, with 5 plates. The stain has mostly dissipated here, but not entirely. 2 plates for the Temple de Faune. 3 plates for Temple de Vesta. 4 plates for Temple de Vesta a Tivoli. 4 plates for Temple de la Fortune Virile. and continues for 321 pages with a full page plate on nearly every other page (137 in all) -- printed with text on the other side. All traces of the dampstain are completely gone by page 140 or so. Pages faded from age & with the dampstain to the first third or so of the book, gradually decreasing in size until disappearing. An important collection of drawings of the ruins of Rome. Out of an abundance of caution, we have consulted the online catalog for Brooklyn Public Library and we find there that there is no mention of this book. (we are currently awaiting a reply from their reference department to see if they have any internal records of its de-accessioning. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Extra shipping necessary to box up this wonderful volume for shipping. Seller Inventory # XXIV-17
