Edith, a Poem

Edith, A Poem by Edward Peter Allanson begins a narrative about Edith Wylde, a high-born young woman in Caledonia, and the intertwined loves of her circle. It follows childhood friends Edith, Aymer Crawford, and Lord Claire from carefree youth to a cascade of destinies shaped by wealth, pride, and longing. Edith’s heart is torn between Aymer’s devoted affection and the ambitions of Claire, who wins her hand despite poverty and rivalry. When war beckons, Aymer joins the Highland regiment while Claire rises in rank. The separation tightens their fates: Edith marries Claire, while Aymer’s love remains unspoken. The theatre of battle at Waterloo tests loyalty, strength, and forgiveness. In time, Claire’s jealousy and secret guilt threaten all, and the truth of Edith’s fidelity comes to light. Tragedy, remorse, and ultimately reconciliation culminate in the union of Aymer and Edith after Claire’s death, a conclusion framed by themes of honor, sacrifice, and the redemptive power of love.
