Education and Security: Global Learning for Sustainable Development

This prescient book explores the relationship of security and education development in local, regional and global perspectives. Employing a critical comparative approach, the book concludes that global learning to support locally relevant participation, and deliberative dialogue, are crucial responses to the UNESCO Futures of Education agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Education and Security is the outcome of a collaboration of renowned experts from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Cases examined include teacher training for supporting the instruction of large groups of students in Tanzania, changing requirements for teacher training in Türkiye, anti-racism instruction in Finland, the changing role of NGOs in efforts to advance the use of SEL practices across several continents, resilience building in Denmark and Europe at large, as well as insights from Ukraine on efforts to support refugees and a continued development of education in a context of war.

Educators, education planners and researchers working with the development of education policy and practices will benefit from the broad range of cases analysed. This volume is also an essential resource for students and scholars of sociology, comparative education and citizenship education looking to further their understanding of the relationship between education and security.
