This pioneering book on educational leadership brings together 14 studies undertaken by the researchers directly or indirectly related to AKU-IED in Pakistan. First of its kind, it will be of interest to a wide range of readers, including theoreticians, practitioners, researchers and policy makers in the area of educational leadership at school and university levels.
About the Author
Jan-e-Alam Khaki is an Assistant Professor at the Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development. Currently, he is heading the PhD programme at AKU-IED, besides teaching. He is also engaged as a consultant to the Higher Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, and has been teaching to selected groups of higher education faculty members from both public and private universities in Pakistan in the area of educational planning and management. Along with triple masters, including one from the University of London in Education, Dr Khaki has a doctorate degree from the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute of Studies in Education (UT/OISE/). Serving for the last eleven years at the Aga Khan University as a faculty member, Dr Khaki has been teaching educational leadership and management courses to MED and PhD programmes, besides conducting numerous professional development courses for senior government officials, including headteachers in Pakistan. He is one of the few pioneers in offering educational leadership and management credited courses in Pakistan at the AKU-IED. Currently, Dr Khaki is heavily involved at AKU-IED in conceptualizing, implementing and teaching educational leadership and management programmes, sponsored by ED-LINKS and funded by USAID in Pakistan. He is the Academic Coordinator for these programmes which are aimed at improving the leadership and management capacity of headteachers, district education officials and other elementary teaching college faculty members in the provinces of Sindh, Balochistan and the Islamabad Capital Territory. These are long term projects which are aimed at helping the Government of Pakistan improve its educational offerings at the primary and secondary levels. Qamar Safdar is an Assistant Professor at the AKU-IED, teaching educational leadership and management courses at various levels, including M.Ed. She joined the AKU-IED in 1998. She has a Masters degree in Education and International Development from the Institute of Education, University of London (IoE/UoL), a Masters degree in English Literature from Mysore University, India. As well, she did an Advanced Diploma in School Management (ADISM) from the AKU-IED. At present, she is teaching leadership and management at the Certificate, Advanced Diploma and Masters Level. She is a pioneer faculty member, like Dr Khaki, in conceptualizing, implementing and teaching educational leadership courses in Pakistan. She is also the Chair of the Ethical Review Committee as well as General Secretary, School Headteachers' Association for Development of Education (SHADE). She is also the founding member of Association for Promoting Ethics in Education (APEE). Before joining AKU-IED, she held the position of Principal and Administrator of Al Murtaza Secondary School, Karachi. Currently, she is co-authoring a book on the educational leadership and management practices covering the South Asian Countries. Qamar is also engaged in the ED-LINKS programmes mentioned above under Dr Khaki's name, as a faculty member and sometimes as the Coordinator, at all levels including conceptualization, implementation and teaching of the programmes. Qamar has been awarded the Star Laureate by the South Asian Publications in 2008 for her contributions to the field of education in South Asia.
