Edwin Flack (1873-1935) was Australia's first Olympic competitor and gold medalist, famously nicknamed the "Lion of Athens" for his dominant performance at the inaugural 1896 Athens Games. An accountant and runner, he won gold in the 800m and 1500m, competed in the marathon, and earned a bronze in tennis.
