Edwin, Or, the Motherless Boy: Interspersed With Pieces of Original Poetry

Edwin, Or, The Motherless Boy: Interspersed With Pieces Of Original Poetry by Bourne Hall Draper is a Christian didactic tale set in early 19th-century England. It centers on Edwin, a motherless boy raised by his devoted father, Mr. Howard, a pastor who educates him in Scripture, virtue, and piety. Through intimate scenes of daily walks, family worship, and Sabbath observance, the narrative emphasizes prayer, repentance, humility, and service to God and neighbor. The story contrasts Edwin’s steadfast religious formation with the dangers of vice as seen in his cousin George Blunt, and repeatedly extols the wisdom found in creation and biblical revelation. Interwoven with Edwin’s diary entries and travels to Derbyshire's caves, Roman ruins, and other wonders, the book frames nature as a mirror of divine goodness and majesty, guiding him toward eternal hope and reunion with loved ones in heaven. A devotional educational work urging gratitude, benevolence, and unwavering trust in Christ’s saving grace.
