Edwin Smith, an American Egyptologist, purchased two papyrus rolls in 1862 possibly written by the earliest known physician, Imhotep, Egypt's great architect-physician about 3000 B.C. The papyrus contained 48 cases dealing with injuries to upper extremities. This edition reproduces Volume I in its entirety, along with a sample hieroglyphic page, in reduced form from Volume II. Included is a booklet "Notes From The Editors". xi, Foreword, Three Parts, Indices, Addenda, Eight Plates, 596 pp. CONDITION: Hardbound forest green cowhide, gilded page edges, gilt design on covers, title on hubbed spine.
