The Effect of Pruning in the Training of Young Olive Trees (Classic Reprint)

How pruning shapes olive trees and their harvests over time

A detailed, data-driven look at how different pruning styles affect growth, form, and crop yield across four olive varieties. This study follows several pruning systems, from light annual pruning to severe thinning, over seven years. It notes how tree form, trunk growth, and crop results vary by variety, including Mission, Sevillano, Ascolano, and Manzanillo. The findings help explain when pruning helps and when it hinders development or yield.

• How four pruning systems compare to severe pruning in shaping trees and sustaining growth.
• Effects on trunk size, growth timing, and the appearance of wounds and repairs.
• Variation in responses among different olive varieties and how yields change over time.
• Practical insights for managing pruning schedules, crop expectations, and tree health.
