Robert de Rustafjaell was "a Bey of the Imperial Ottoman Empire, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society," and affiliated with a number of "other learned bodies." He lived in Egypt for 10 years and "devoted himself almost exclusively to Predynastic research. He made a remarkable collection of flint implements . and his collection of pottery . is one of the largest and most comprehensive in existence."
