本书作者李靖炎是中国大陆的一位一生颇有些传奇色彩的学者。幼年因抗战从天津来到大后方云南。高中时跳班上大学却参加革命，到农村搞武装斗争。但胜利后却放弃仕途而重新回到大学。毕业后因科学研究与教学成为大学里拔尖的青年教师。但'大跃进'后却因此成了走'白专道路'的典型而受批判。但是在心情极度压抑的情况下却冒险顶垮了'批判达尔文'的荒唐运动。结果却又因祸得福地得以进入中国科学院，得以参加1962年最高级别的学术会议并崭露头角。这又引起了研究所中极左人物的不满，被弄去'劳动锻炼'和到农村参加'四清'运动。却又因为冒险为一起冤案成功平反而受到表扬。但是回到本单位，立即在文革中被打作'反动学术权威'，被弄去作动物饲养工人。但在此期间却又开始撰写关于细胞的进化起源的专著，后来为大陆最高级别的科学出版社出版。

文革结束后很快得到晋级，有关的事迹在省级上受到表彰。后来长期担任云南省政协常委（无党派）。改革开后一直坚持有关细胞的进化起源的开拓性研究。离休后来到美国。不顾视力残疾继续从事专业的理论研究，并开展了对马克思主义的理论分析，同样取得了独特的成就。

作者是细胞生物学家、进化生物学家，是国际上进化细胞生物学的开拓者之一，主要从事细胞核的进化起源问题的研究。2005年提出了迄今唯一的一个有分子生物学依据的鞭毛外共生起源假说。

在社会主义的理论问题上，作者是列宁斯大林理论的分析批判者，是马克思、恩格斯学说的扬弃者与发展着，自成一家之言。作者因此成为大陆上的前《炎黄春秋》杂志的核心撰稿人之一。
