Large folding colour pictorial/pictographic map, 78 x 52 cm, inset map of the Japanese occupied area, marginal fold tears and inner fold splits with a little minor loss along the lower right fold, lower right fold stained on reverse with a little light show through on lower right panel, occasional very light spots of foxing, a few minor chips and tears along margins now repaired. Still a bright, clean image that would display very well. A late 1930s pictorial map of China and Korea, published by the Japanese magazine "Ie no Hikari" (The Light of the Home): an extraordinary contrast of a charming image with an underlying message of military expansionism. The resources of China are depicted with cute pictographs of people and products. We see images of Chinese farmers tending crops, feeding livestock and harvesting soy-beans, Mongolian herders with their flock, and trains of camels crossing the Gobi Desert. Around the outer borders of China there is a more ominous row of gun-toting Soviet soldiers. In the lower right corner is an insert map of the whole of China showing the extent of Japanese occupation of the Chinese mainland. "Ie no Hikari" was a highly influential magazine associated with agricultural cooperative movement, and aimed mainly at rural households. Seller Inventory # 214269
