Con el paso del tiempo, S�focles (c. 496-406 a. C.) se ha convertido en el autor paradigm�tico de la tragedia griega, y sobre su obra descansa en gran medida nuestra comprensi�n de este g�nero y de sus implicaciones filos�ficas y religiosas. Electra es una de las siete tragedias conservadas de S�focles, cuya fecha de representaci�n nos es desconocida. Dramatiza un episodio m�tico de la saga de los a su regreso a Micenas de la guerra, Agamen�n es asesinado por su mujer, Clitemnestra, y su primo, Egisto. El �nico hijo var�n del matrimonio es Orestes, que siendo un ni�o es enviado al exilio. En el palacio crecen las hijas, Cris�temis, que se resigna a lo ocurrido, y Electra, que alberga resentimiento contra los asesinos de su padre que la llevar�n a vivir en perpetuo lamento anhelando el regreso de su hermano como vengador.
