Help students understand how electricity works.Grades 3–5. Can you picture life without electricity? You wouldn't be able to use your cell phone, television, washing machine, or even flip a switch to turn on your lights. There's no doubt our lives would be much harder—and not nearly as much fun without electricity. Electric Circuits, part of the STC Literacy Series, teaches students about how electricity was discovered and put to work, how it functions in living organisms, and what scientists are still learning about it. Grades 3–5. Electric Circuits opens with the story of Benjamin Franklin and his experiments that proved lightning is a form of electricity. Another story tells of American inventor Thomas Edison, whose practical application of electricity helped shape the modern world. A section of the book outlines the path that electricity takes from power plant to living room. Finally, the book looks at electricity in nature, from electric eels in the water to lightning in the skies. Developed to enhance the teaching of the Science and Technology Concepts (STC) unit, the STC Literacy Series Electric Circuits reader supports inquiry-based science lessons with engaging informational text. The content gives students a natural transition from hands-on investigations, builds background knowledge to reinforce conceptual learning, and lets students apply relevant nonfiction to their own real-world experiences. Questions provided throughout the book encourage critical thinking and allow children to be actively involved in their learning.
