A two-wheel-drive electric vehicle example illustrates how road loads, acceleration, traction limits, and transmission characteristics are translated into motor torque, speed, and continuous and peak power requirements. An interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor provides the illustrative basis for topology selection, preliminary sizing, magnetic circuit assessment, and winding design. Particular attention is given to the relationships among conductor arrangement, slot fill, frequency dependent copper losses, and hairpin manufacturability.
