Electro-Optical and Infrared Surveillance Systems Essentials

Practical guidance for building and evaluating surveillance systems that combine electro-optical and infrared imaging. This book brings together the core ideas needed to design, calibrate, operate, and assess multi-sensor EO and IR systems for persistent detection, tracking, and target identification.

It begins with the mission side of the problem, clarifying what surveillance systems are expected to do, how performance is measured, and how to translate operational needs into system requirements. From there, it moves into the fundamentals of visible and thermal imaging, including optics, illumination, detector behavior, image sampling, and the physical differences between EO, SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR sensing.

The middle chapters focus on system building and image quality. Readers will find clear treatment of sensor selection, timing, networking, calibration, registration, stabilization, and the effects of weather, clutter, motion, glare, and backscatter. The book also explains common preprocessing methods used to prepare frames for reliable analysis, such as contrast enhancement, denoising, background subtraction, and dynamic range management.

Key topics include:

• Detection, tracking, identification, and verification workflows
• Camera and infrared sensor characteristics, constraints, and tradeoffs
• Radiometric and geometric calibration, plus multi-sensor alignment
• Classical and learning-based detection methods
• Track management, data association, and sensor fusion for tracking
• Evidence-oriented review, validation, and field testing practices

The later chapters connect these foundations to operational use. They explain how to fuse EO and IR data at the image, feature, and decision levels, how to maintain tracks through occlusion or sensor loss, and how to support human review with trustworthy evidence packages. The closing material ties everything together with integration, verification, robustness checks, and field trial reporting.

Well suited for engineers, integrators, analysts, and technically minded practitioners who need a clear, structured reference for surveillance systems that must perform in real-world conditions. The result is a useful handbook for moving from concepts to dependable system deployment.
