Elementary Arithmetic, With Brief Notices of Its History

Elementary Arithmetic, With Brief Notices Of Its History by Robert Potts is a Cambridge-era arithmetic manual excerpt focused on Fractions and Decimals, and opening the topic of Ratio and Proportion. The text presents both theory and rules for fractions, with concrete applications to money, measures, and unit conversions, and includes extensive exercises and a hints section reflecting 19th-century Cambridge pedagogy. It moves from definitions of proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, and reduction to lowest terms, to rules for operations with common denominators, reciprocals, and the handling of multiple fractions, sums, products, and quotients. The decimals section covers place-value, decimal arithmetic, terminating and repeating decimals, conversions between decimals and fractions, and practical monetary conversions with rounding and discussion of approximation error. The material introduces ratio and proportion as a bridge to commerce, with problems on money, interest, discounts, stocks, and time-value questions. It is part of a larger Potts series designed for structured, exercise-rich learning, featuring worked examples and a separate Results/Hints section.
