Colenso was a remarkable man, a brilliant Cambridge mathematician, a radical theologian who attacked Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch. He was also involved on the Protestant side in major dispute in S. Africa with the Tractarian Archbishop Gray over jurisdiction. The Privy Council decided for Colenso.
