A very scarce example of English musician, composer and historian Edward Miller's musical treatise on the rules of accompanying the harpsichord or pianoforte. A very scarce work in all editions.First published in 1787, this is a vanishingly scarce circa 1821 re-issue, issued without the preface and index that the first edition had. Dated circa 1821 via the Foundling Museum, as Preston changed their address in 1822.This work features 'eight Italian, eight French & twelve English songs collected from the works of eminent composers antient & modern', in order to provide practical lessons for performers unfamiliar with the principles of harmony.In his work, Miller aimed to make the rules of accompaniment for the harpsichord or piano-forte engaging, by incorporating a selection of songs from various traditions.In addition to his musical works, Miller published historical works about his native Doncaster. In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Losses of leather to back strip, most concentrated to head and tail. Significant rubbing to joints and board perimeters. Rear joint starting, with board somewhat tender. Front joint starting, with board tenderly held by one cord only to the tail. Loss to head of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
