Elements of Chemistry: Containing the Principles of the Science, Both Experimental and Theoretical

Elements Of Chemistry: Containing The Principles Of The Science, Both Experimental And Theoretical by Alonzo Gray presents a thorough late-19th-century chemistry reference that fuses descriptive substance knowledge with practical laboratory instruction and historical context. The work surveys inorganic fundamentals alongside organic chemistry, plant and animal nutrition, and analytical methods, weaving experiments, recipes, and theoretical notes into an integrated manual. Major topics include organic acids, plant alkaloids, oils and fats, colorants, nutritive substances, complex animal constituents, growth and nourishment, and the core techniques of chemical analysis in appendices. It emphasizes a didactic, classroom-oriented approach with apparatus sketches, stepwise procedures, and measurements that illuminate laboratory work and industrial applications alike. The text also situates chemistry within broader natural philosophy, treating caloric, light, and electricity as imponderables that shape theories of heat, color, and galvanic reactions. Overall, the volume forms a foundational reference for chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and education, illustrating how substances are classified, produced, tested, and used in science and daily life.
