About this Item

First edition. Octavo in full contemporary tree calf, red leather spine label stamped in gilt. 208 pps with folding chart frontis. The first book on chess authored by an American (and only the second chess book published in America), attributed to William Blasgrove, allegedly a cousin of the printer and afficionado of the game. In his introductory comments, the author notes the difficulty of obtaining and then of understanding, the various treatises on chess and acknowledges that those of Philidor are by far the best. Withal, states, ".the learner is frequently the peculiar phraseology of the author, and soon becomes involved in a labyrinth of confusion." A binding copy. The boards are split at the spine with front board held only by the binding string, wear along the edges of the boards and spine ends and some scratches to the rear board and a dark stain upper edge. The folding chart is unevenly folded but complete, with a repaired tear. Seriously interested parties may request photos to judge condition. Bookseller Inventory # F306
