This book was assemlbed for exhibitions in 19 different museums throughout the western half of the united states. It focuses on a critical period of Navajo weaving when reservation traders introduced the graphic design and patterning of oriental rugs. Navajo weavers did not merely copy these design motifs, but reinterpreted them, creating a dynamic new tradition. Sixteen rugs are represented here, seven in color and nine in black and white. The book includes a map, chronology, bibliography, and a checklist of all thirty rugs in the exhibition.
