A drawing manual by John Ruskin (1819-1900), an English author, art critic, art historian, and draughtsman. The book is organized into three letters in which he provides instruction, drawing advice, and exercises for beginning artists. In his Preface, Ruskin clarifies that he believes this work to be best-suited for artists who are at least 12 or 14 years old. The Letters are titled as follows: "On First Practice," "Sketching from Nature," and "On Colour and Composition." The Appendix is titled, "Things to Be Studied." In this Second Edition, Ruskin notes that relatively few changes have been made but that he has edited small portions of text and also added some material to the Appendix. One example of the drawing exercises that Ruskin provides is for the artist to sketch a small stone from observation and to draw it in different light settings. He argues that once one can draw a rock from observation, they can draw anything that is observable. He elaborates that the foundation of drawing is simply distinguishing between and depicting areas of dark and light as seen in the observable world. He also writes that mastery of the fine-tipped quill or pen is required in order to master drawing and advises on how to and when to use color.
