Elements of General Knowledge: Introductory to Useful Books in the Principal Branches of Literature and Science

Elements Of General Knowledge: Introductory To Useful Books In The Principal Branches Of Literature And Science by Henry Kett. This two-volume English educational work surveys the principal branches of literature and science for junior students, weaving history, philosophy, mathematics, natural philosophy, botany, mineralogy, chemistry, and the arts into a broad program of general knowledge. It emphasizes moral improvement, civic virtue, and refined taste, urging readers to cultivate reasoning, religious devotion, and public spirit. The volume covers History Of England, Logic, The Mathematics, The Works Of Nature, Botany, Mineralogy, Chemistry, Painting, Music, Poetry, Foreign Travel, and the Professions (law, medicine, clergy), interlacing classical authorities such as Cicero, Bacon, Newton, and Locke as models. It argues education should prepare citizens for agriculture, commerce, and governance, and closes with exhortations to diligence, filial piety, and virtuous conduct. The work mirrors early 19th-century British aims: broad knowledge, moral formation, and the cultivation of taste.
