Elements Of Logic: Comprising The Substance Of The Article In The Encyclopædia Metropolitana; With Additions, &C — Richard Whately. This work presents the opening framework of Whately’s Elements of Logic, arguing that logic is both a science (an analysis of the reasoning process) and an art (the proper employment of reasoning in practice). It contends that reasoning requires more than strict deduction, demanding skill in selecting and combining known truths, as well as observation and experiment in empirical domains, with mathematics resting on fixed axioms and definitions while empirical disciplines rely on provisional premises whose certainty varies. The text distinguishes two modes of intellectual work—inference (the philosopher’s task) and proof (the advocate’s task)—and notes that the same reasoning can be viewed from either angle with different preparatory habits. Emphasizing candor and fair-mindedness, it urges careful language use to avoid misreasoning, differentiates verbal from real disputes, and discusses realism and the ambiguities of terms. An Appendix on Ambiguous Terms and practical exercises promote disciplined, precise thinking and the conversion of arguments into valid syllogisms, aimed at improving critical reasoning across disciplines.
