He resigned in 1830 because of paralysis. His "System of Logick" was first published in 1816 and went through many editions in English and German. Like others at Harvard, he was a prominent disciple of philosophy of the Scottish Enlightenment, emphasizing reason and moral sense and Platonism. This marriage of natural science with morals and religion contrasted with the "common sense" philosophy at Princeton, the latter ultimately degenerating into a form of pedantry. Scottish philosophy invaded America in the early 1800's and emphasized intellectual philosophy and the scientific basis of moral philosophy, introducing the notion of hypothesis in the study of nature as a supplement to the logical constructs of induction and deduction. The early editions of Hedge's tome were published in Cambridge, at first by the University printers. This Cooperstown imprint is unusual.
