In the form of a simple narrative following the Herrmann family, with each chapter providing an example of virtues and vices. Written by Christian Gotthilf Salzmann, a German educational reformer and the founder of the Schnepfenthal institution. Translated from the original German by Mary Wollstonecraft, a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, who may have "made the stories English, and added and altered where necessary" as stated by Janet Todd. In the original full brown calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and minor loss to the head of the spine. Minor cracks to the joints with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Minor age toning to the extremities. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page. Good.
