The Elements of Style

The structure of English grammar can be difficult to map out if the essentials of the language aren’ t strong for a learner. This book aims at simplifying the process of knowing the language and its style in a comprehensible manner. The rules of usage of English which are usually not focused upon, like the form of possessive nouns, using commas with conjunction and making sentences more precise have been discussed in this book to help achieve clarity in communication.

The chapters have been divided in accordance with the patterns that help with the majority of sentence formations. The author has first-hand experience as a professor at Cornell University which enhances the entire learning process. This book is a must-have for everyone trying to sharpen their grammatical skills to enhance their vocal expression.

William Strunk, Jr was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 1 July 1869. He went on to have a long career as an educator after receiving a bachelor’ s degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1890 and a PhD from Cornell University in 1896— where he taught English for forty-six years. Strunk wrote and had privately printed the first edition of The Elements of Style for his university in 1918. In 1935, a revised edition titled The Elements and Practice of Composition, co-authored by Edward A. Tenney, was published. Strunk is best known as an editor, having worked with titles by reputed authors such as William Shakespeare, John Dryden and James Fenimore Cooper. His only other book, English Metres, was published locally in 1922. Strunk died in Ithaca, New York, on 26 September 1946.
