Elements Of Useful Knowledge. Volume I.: Containing A Historical And Geographical Account Of The United States; For The Use Of Schools by Noah Webster surveys a broad program of knowledge suited to schoolrooms. The volume blends natural philosophy with geography and history, aiming to teach readers how the world works, from the solar system and Earth’s structure to continents, oceans, mountains and rivers. It interweaves scientific explanation with moral and civic instruction, presenting a primer on astronomy (the solar system, celestial spheres, tides, seasons) alongside a geography of North America, including the United States, Canada, and the coasts and interior waters. The book advances a narrative of discovery and settlement, tracing voyages from Columbus to colonial ventures, and it treats earlier civilizations, the Native Americans, and the European colonization of the Americas. It emphasizes method—classroom-friendly organization of topics, orthography of place-names, and the aim to foster useful knowledge, virtue, and public virtue. The Preface explains the educational mission, and the successive sections cover Solar System, Geography, Rivers, Mountains, and an historical survey that culminates in an outline of American history.
