The Elgin Marbles: With an Abridged Historical and Topographical Account of Athens

The Elgin Marbles: With An Abridged Historical And Topographical Account Of Athens by Edward John Burrow offers a panoramic consolidation of Greek art, topography, and antiquities centered on the Elgin collection. The work combines a succinct digest of Athens’s history from legendary ages to the death of Pericles, with extended sections on Athenian biography, architecture, sculpture, painting, and philosophy. It situates the Elgin Marbles within their original Greek contexts, catalogues the monuments on the Acropolis, and explains the procedures and debates surrounding their removal, including the House of Commons Report (The Elgin Marbles: Report from the Select Committee) and the financialities of acquisition. The volume also presents a detailed plan of Athens, Pausanias-era descriptions, and a catalog (with plates) of the marbles, metopes, frieze, and pediments, interwoven with historical narratives. The book thereby aims to illuminate both artistic achievement and urban topography, and to promote informed public appreciation through careful sourcing and context.
