Add to basketBorchers, Elisabeth. Elisabeth Borchers. Translated by Ruth and Matthew Mead. Santa Barbara: Unicorn Press, 1969, 55pp., PAPERBACK, good copy with light wear to cover and edges, appears to have lost its front cover label, NO title label. Unicorn German series. - English and German on in subsequent sections of the book. - Elisabeth Borchers was born in Homberg on the Rhine and after periods spent in France and the United States now lives and works beside the river at Neuwied where she is an editor in the publishing house of Luchterhand, well known in Germany for its sympathetic policy towards contemporary poetry. Miss Borchers has published two volumes of poetry, Gedichte (Poems) in 1961 and Der Tisch an dem wir sitzen (The Table At Which We Sit) in 1967. Her translations from the French have been widely praised and she is also the author of a collection of radio plays, Nacht aus Eis (Night of Ice), the title work of which, awarded an important prize by the South German Radio, has been performed many times in Germany and was recently translated by Ruth and Matthew Mead for publication in Unicorn Journal, Spring, 1968. All her books have been published by Luchterhand Verlag, Neuwied and Berlin. Elisabeth Borchers has a lyric grace which is tougher than it may at first appear. She brings a freshness to that "fairy-tale" element which seems a continuing weft in German verse; the freshness of a new chant. In other poems will be found a compassion broad enough to contain mockery. At first glance, we feel we are listening to the lieder of Schumann, but soon realize that we are hearing distorted echoes, written in a world where all the playthings of childhood have been broken. With deceptive simplicity, this poet takes us into that world with her. "der Tisch an dem wir sitzen ist hart gefroren.".
