Ellen, Countess of Castle Howel: a Novel

Ellen, Countess Of Castle Howel: A Novel by Agnes Maria Bennett. Ellen Meredith, heiress of Code Gwyn in North Wales, is introduced to the world of London society when her venerable grandfather Sir Arthur Meredith hosts visitors and errant nobles who stir ambition and romance. The four-volume tale follows Ellen’s education in literature, music, and decorum under guardians and a scheming circle including Winifred Griffiths and Percival Evelyn. Two rival suitors—the ardent Lord Claverton and the earnest Percival—compete for her favor, while the wealthy but unscrupulous John Morgan threatens to foreclose the family estate. Ellen’s virtue is tested by temptations, fashionable intrigues, and social pressure; a grander match appears in the form of Lord Castle Howel, who offers protection and a title. The plot interweaves domestic devotion, moral trial, and social satire as Morgan’s schemes unfold, Ellen’s reputation is challenged, and love, duty, and fortune collide. The narrative culminates in Ellen’s ascent to countess and the stabilization of her family’s fortunes across the world of high society.
