Elliptic Curve Cryptography for Constrained Devices: Algorithms, Architectures, and Practical Implementations

This book is a step towards showing thepracticability of Public Key Cryptography (PKC) andin particular Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) onlow-end constrained devices like sensor nodes andRF-ID chips. The book presents the flexibility thatECC provides in the choice of parameters andalgorithms at different hierarchies for efficientimplementations on constrained platforms like 8-bitmicro-processors. Architectural enhancements withsoftware/hardware co-design including instruction setextensions were investigated for low-level finitefield arithmetic used in ECC. Finally, a highly areaoptimized ASIC implementation of an ECC co-processorusing standard 0.35um CMOS libraries is presentedusing an innovative arithmetic and architectural design.The book is intended for students and researchersinvolved in realizing practical public-keycryptographic implementations on constrained devicesused in ambient intelligent (AmI) environments,sensor networks and RF-ID applications.

Sandeep Kumar is an expert in the area of applied data securityin embedded systems. He completed his B.Tech and M.Tech inElectrical Engineering from the Indian Institute ofTechnology-Bombay, India in 2002 and his Ph.D.(Dr.-Ing.) fromRuhr-University Bochum, Germany in 2006. Presently he is a SeniorResearcher at Philips Research, Netherlands.
