No single group in early modern Europe produced as many emblem books as the Jesuits. G. Richard Dimler, S. J., has been a pioneer in the field of Jesuit emblem scholarship. With publications and conference presentations spanning some forty years or more on various aspects of the Jesuit emblem, Fr. Dimler has almost single-handedly put Jesuit emblematics on the international scholarly map. His extensive publications in this area include The Jesuit Emblem: Bibliography of Secondary Literature with Select Commentary and Descriptions (AMS Press, 2005); Studies in the Jesuit Emblem (AMS Press, 2007); a collection of his published articles and essays; and (with Peter M. Daly), Corpus Librorum Emblematicum: The Jesuit Series, a five volume illustrated bibliography of Jesuit emblem books (University of Toronto Press, 1997-2007).
Fr. Dimler's foundational contribution to emblem studies was recognized by Fordham University in 1999, when it named him "Research Professor of Jesuit Emblem Studies," and, more recently, with the awarding of emeritus status. Emblematic Images & Religious Texts: Studies in Honor of G. Richard Dimler, S. J., is offered as tribute by his colleagues to his pioneering scholarship in Jesuit emblem studies. This profusely illustrated volume brings together studies on a wide variety of emblem books and emblematic images by sixteen scholars grouped into three topical sections: "Ignatius and the Society of Jesus"; "Saints and Devotion"; and "Religious Emblem Books," It also includes a complete list of Fr. Dimler's publications.
