Synopsis:

The Central Texas Region has witnessed unprecedented growth and development over the last century and there is no sign of an imminent slowdown. This growth is especially evident in Austin, which has been doubling in population every twenty years and has experienced revitalization in downtown mixed-use and residential development, cultural amenities, and public parks and open spaces. Emergent Urbanism: Evolution in Urban Form, Texas a joint Placemaking Studio, Congress for the New Urbanism, and University of Texas publication is a richly illustrated resource that tells the story of the Central Texas region, highlights current policies and up-and-coming projects, and provides balanced views on the growth, change, and prospective future of Austin. This book offers significant insight into the social, physical, and economic planning and design of Central Texas by a number of local and influential authors, including Mayor Will Wynn, a leading advocate of green building and sustainable design; Senator Kirk Watson; Fritz Steiner, Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas; as well as architect, urban designer, and CNU Athena Medal award recipient, Sinclair Black, FAIA (Principal, Placemaking Studio). Proceeds from book sales will be donated to a University of Texas School of Architecture Scholarship Fund.

About the Author: Professor Sinclair Black is an urban designer, planner, architect, educator, and author. He has planned, programmed, designed, and built projects in Central Texas for forty years. His programming and planning work is based on a commitment to the client, an understanding of the needs of the end-users, and a thorough analysis of each site and its context. Mr. Black s design work is grounded in years of study of the vernacular architecture of Central Texas, and strives to preserve and celebrate the particulars of the region. He has concentrated on the cultivation of sensitive, client-responsive architecture that is appropriate to human scale and local building history. In Austin, Mr. Black is both professionally and personally involved with neighborhood groups, parks advocates, and the downtown business community, and has endeavored throughout his career to facilitate consensus on a wide range of matters affecting the built environment. He has spent countless hours providing pro-bono input on such projects as Triangle Park, Seaholm Power Plant, and the Palmer Redevelopment. He has also been a strong advocate of Smart Growth and a pioneer in downtown mixed-use development. Frederick Steiner is the dean of the School of Architecture and Henry M. Rockwell Chair in Architecture, University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he was director of the School of Planning and Landscape Architecture, College of Architecture and Environmental Design, Arizona State University (ASU) and taught planning, landscape architecture, and environmental science at Washington State University, the University of Colorado-Denver, and the University of Pennsylvania. As a Fulbright-Hays scholar in 1980, he conducted research on ecological planning at the Wageningen University, The Netherlands. In 1998, he was the National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize Fellow in Historic Preservation and Conservation at the American Academy in Rome. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and an Academic Fellow of the Urban Land Institute. He is a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He teaches courses in the areas of environmental impact assessment, landscape analysis, and landscape architecture theory. Dean Steiner received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in city and regional planning and a Master of Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned a Master of Community Planning and a B.S. in Design from the University of Cincinnati. Dean Steiner received an honorary M.Phil. in Human Ecology from the College of the Atlantic.
