With these biographies of three men and a woman who had until then been regarded as heroes - Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Thomas Arnold and General Charles Gordon, the author established a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy are combined with irreverence and wit. Nightgale is portrayed favorably and with sympathy against the obtuseness of the military and politicians, while the other three are seen in a lesser light than the heroic tradition had given them. The work was originally published in 1918 by Chatto and Windus, and first published by Modern Library in 1933.
