Emotion as the Basis of Civilization

"Emotion as the Basis of Civilization" is an insightful and pioneering study in sociology and social psychology that explores the fundamental role human emotions play in the construction and stability of societies. J. H. Denison argues that civilizations are not merely held together by laws or economic interests, but by powerful emotional bonds and shared sentiments that unite individuals into a cohesive whole. Through a broad historical lens, the work examines how various cultures have utilized religious fervor, tribal loyalty, and national pride to create social order.

Denison traces the evolution of social structures from ancient patriarchal systems to modern democratic ideals, emphasizing that the success of any political or social change depends heavily on the emotional readiness of the citizenry. By analyzing the "emotional cultures" of different eras, the author provides a unique perspective on why some civilizations flourish while others crumble. This work remains a significant contribution to the understanding of human behavior and social organization, offering a compelling look at the invisible psychological threads that bind humanity together. It is an essential read for students of sociology, history, and psychology interested in the deep-seated motivations behind cultural development.
